How to Unlock your Mac with Apple Watch in 2023

Unlocking your Mac with your Apple Watch is a convenient and secure way to access your computer without having to enter your password every time. It’s easy to set up and use and adds an extra layer of security to your computer.

First, ensure that your Apple Watch and Mac are up-to-date and connected to the same iCloud account. Also, ensure that your Mac is running at least macOS Sierra and your Apple Watch is running at least watchOS 3. In this post, I’m using the latest macOS, Ventura 13.1 and WatchOS 9.2.

You also wanted to make sure that your Mac and Apple Watch are setups as follows:

  • Your Mac and Apple Watch are connected to the same Apple ID and secured with two-factor authentication.
  • Your Apple Watch uses a passcode.
  • Both your Mac and Apple Watch have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled.

Next, open the Apple menu  > System Settings on your Mac and go to the Touch ID & Password tab. At the bottom, under the Apple Watch section, your Apple Watch name and a toggle button should appear. Turn on the toggle switch to enable this feature.

Once you enable this feature, your Mac will automatically lock when you step away from it. It will automatically unlock it with your Apple Watch when you return.

It’s important to note that unlocking your Mac with your Apple Watch requires that your Apple Watch is unlocked and on your wrist and that your Mac is running on battery power.

You must enter your password to unlock your Mac if your Apple Watch is not in range.

I fell in love with Mac in 2008 and haven't looked back since. With 15 years of development experience under my belt, I've got plenty of insights to share, both on and off the keyboard.
